Market transparency

Market transparency is a key tool for supporting stability in the global grains market and strengthening food security. It is one of the core objectives of the Grains Trade Convention, 1995 (GTC), the only international treaty governing trade in grains.

As a means of monitoring day-to-day movements in international markets for agricultural commodities and ocean freight, the IGC calculates daily and weekly indices, spanning key origins and major routes, respectively.

Grain Market Report (GMR)

The GMR is a monthly publication, which reviews the situation and outlook for grains, rice, oilseeds (& products), pulses and dry bulk ocean freight.

Grains and Oilseeds Index (GOI)

The GOI is a daily, trade-weighted measure of export (fob) prices across key origins, spanning grains, oilseeds and rice markets.

Grains and Oilseeds Freight Index (GOFI)

The GOFI is a daily, trade-weighted measure of movements in dry bulk ocean freight costs covering key selected routes for grains and oilseeds.

Updated regularly, the IGC Secretariat provides comprehensive estimates and outlooks for supply and demand for a large number of commodities, including balances for more than 100 countries. Data for G20 countries are made available on the public website for wheat, maize, soyabeans and rice.

Five-year baseline projections of supply and demand

The Secretariat periodically publishes five-year projections for global supply and demand. The projections outlined in the latest report represent a possible supply and demand scenario for the major grains (wheat and maize), rice and soyabeans for the five years to 2030/31, taking into account a number of broad assumptions.

The outlook assumes that growing conditions are conducive for yields to reach average levels and does not take account of any variability linked to particularly favourable or unfavourable weather in an individual season.

Data up to 2025/26 based on forecasts issued in GMR 571, 20 November 2025.

Using real-time shipping data, the IGC Secretariat provides an up-to-date view of maritime wheat cargo flows through an interactive dashboard, accompanied by supporting commentary.
The dashboard is updated monthly.
